7.2 on a Rest Day: The Habit Stack Held While the Engine Idled

The Number Was Kinder Than It Should Have Been

7.2 for a day where I didn’t move my body once. No swim, no weights, no BJJ. The Garmin is a flat line of zeros. On paper that should have tanked the whole thing — health is one of my eight dimensions and it usually pulls hard on the score. But health still landed at 7, and the reason is boring and important: I slept like a rock. 84 sleep score, nearly two hours of deep, nearly two hours of REM, resting heart rate at 45. The body took what it needed. Sometimes the most honest thing your system can tell you is “you were tired and you finally rested.”

What actually held the day up wasn’t work — work was a 6, and honestly that’s generous. It was the habit stack. Habits at 8, faith at 8. Tefillin went on. The Middot check-in got logged. Lior got his morning dance. I asked Daphna one real question — the NB (Nishmat B’Ol, carrying her load) question I’ve been trying to build into every day. Blinkist, blog, budget check, all logged. That’s the infrastructure of the week running even while the engine idles in the driveway. Yalla, that counts for something.

The Finance Line Is the One That’s Actually Talking to Me

Finance sat at 6, and it’s the real tension of this whole cycle. Personal spend is running above income this month — Travel and Misc doing most of the damage. The joint picture is healthier, more in than out, but I refuse to let the joint number launder the personal side. That’s a gap, and pretending it’s fine because “finances on track” appears in the summary would be exactly the kind of self-flattery I write this log to avoid.

The portfolio itself is fine — up on the day, VT carrying the load like it always does, the semi and chip positions doing their slow Aschenbrenner-thesis thing. But that’s the market working, not me. MU moved a few dollars, noise not signal. The one thing I did right on the money front was actually log the budget check. Naming the gap is the first move. Closing it is next month’s job.

Rest Day vs. Drift Day

Here’s the honest wrestle. When I wrote the raw journal earlier I called today a wash — a drift day, a black hole. And there’s truth in that: I didn’t plan Sunday, I didn’t log a single meal so protein compliance is a total blind spot, and the automations didn’t all fire so I woke up not fully set for Monday. That’s lazy maintenance.

But re-reading the dimensions, I think I was being unfair to myself. A drift day is one where the structure collapses. Today the structure held — I just didn’t add to it. That’s a rest day. The difference matters. A rest day is a decision the system makes for you when your resting HR is 45 and you’ve been training twice a day. The failure wasn’t resting; the failure was not knowing I was resting until the numbers told me afterward.

Tomorrow's priorities

Tomorrow is simple: get back under the bar, one session minimum. Log meals from the first bite so I stop flying blind on protein. Chase down the SA police certificate delivery date. The open question I’m sitting with tonight — is a planned rest day worth more than a good workout on a day you shouldn’t have trained? I think it is. I just want to be the one who calls it, not the one who finds out at 9pm that that’s what today was.
