8.6 and Sharp: Soloveitchik Closed, Fork Kept Going
What the numbers said
8.6 today, mood logged as sharp — and for once the number and the feeling agreed. This wasn’t a grind-it-out day where the score flatters me. It was a genuinely good Wednesday with one loud, honest crack running through it.
The dimensions tell the story cleanly. Family 9. Faith 9. Learning 10. Habits 9. Those four carried the day, and they carried it because I actually did the boring things: tefillin, meditation, a Middot check-in, and — the one that matters most — home by 7 to be with Lior. I made a promise to Daphna and I kept it. No asterisk, no “mostly.” Home. On the floor with my son. That’s the 9 in family, and it’s the reason today feels like it counts.
The learning 10 has a name: I closed The Lonely Man of Faith. Book 23 on the year, streak alive. Soloveitchik is not a book you skim on the train — it’s the kind of finish that lifts a whole day on its own. That one felt earned.
The crack: health at 7
Here’s where I have to be straight with myself. Health came in at 7, and the 7 is generous.
The recovery side was almost comical in how good it was — 9.2 hours of sleep, resting heart rate at 42, overnight stress at 10, body battery pegged at 100. I woke up a fully charged machine. And the HIIT got done: 36 minutes, average heart rate 111, sharp and clean.
Then I ate like someone who never made a plan. 2,538 calories against a 2,000 target — 127%. Fat doubled: 124g against a 60g goal. And the part that actually stings, protein came in at 127.8g against 130. Two grams short. Two. I had seven meals logged and I could not close a two-gram gap because I was busy eating a second cottage cheese I didn’t even want.
That’s not a health catastrophe. It’s a habits miss wearing a health costume. I saw every choice in the log as I made it. Yalla — call it what it is.

Work held, system nagged
Work landed at 7 — fine, but murky. There’s a project with a hard date nine days out, and today I moved around it more than through it. Tasks open, none overdue, which reads as either “deep push” or “not closing,” and I can’t always tell which from the inside. That’s the tell. Finance sat comfortably at 8; the allocations did their job and I did nothing, which is exactly right on a day like this.
System at 8 is flattering too — the morning brief ran clean, but a couple of my automations sputtered. I can’t coach a team on building systems while mine quietly degrade in the background. Triage tomorrow.

The real lesson of an 8.6 day isn’t the number — it’s that the good days and the sloppy habits live in the same body. Recovery was elite. Faith and family ran flawless. And I still couldn’t put the fork down two grams short of a goal I could reach in my sleep. Tomorrow: second workout, protein closed, one concrete move on the project. The body’s charged to 100. No excuse left except the one I keep feeding it. Question I’m sitting with tonight — why is it always the smallest gap, the last two grams, that I let slide?
