8.6 and Slow On Purpose: The Day Shabbat Won and Protein Lost

The number said 8.6. The mood said reflective. Both were right.

Saturdays don’t score like weekdays, and I’ve stopped pretending they should. An 8.6 on a Shabbat isn’t the same animal as an 8.6 on a Tuesday — it’s earned differently. Today the shape of it was clear: family=9, faith=9, habits a clean 10. Work sat at 5 and I didn’t touch it, on purpose. The one number that actually bothered me wasn’t work at all. It was health at 7, and specifically the protein line.

The day in one sentence more or less wrote itself: Shabbat held, family full, habits perfect — protein the only drag. That’s an honest summary. The system held its grip on a day when the week loosens its own. That’s the whole test of a habit engine — does it survive the day you’re not gripping the wheel? Today it did. 10/10, clean sweep, on a Saturday. Yalla.

Family and faith did the heavy lifting — and that was the point

Pool time with Daphna and Lior wasn’t a break from the day. It was the day. Lior at this age treats water like it owes him something, and watching Daphna laugh at him going after it — that’s not a side quest, that’s the main mission. Faith checked in without friction too: Middot check-in done, Tefillin logged, the rhythm of it holding. When faith=9 and family=9 land on the same day, the 8.6 basically builds itself. I didn’t optimize anything. I just showed up and let Shabbat do what it’s supposed to do, which is slow everything down and put the right things in front.

That’s the part I keep having to relearn. I’m wired to add reps — a second workout, one more email to the silent prospect, a portfolio glance. Shabbat is the deliberate subtraction. And the score doesn’t punish me for it. That’s the system working as designed, not against it.

Health at 7: the honest part

Here’s where I don’t get to feel clever. Substrate was good — 7.3 hours of sleep, low stress, resting HR at 42. The body was ready. The swim happened: 1km at lunch, only workout of the day. On a Saturday with weights and BJJ both available, one swim is light, and I’ll own that. It’s acceptable, not admirable.

But the real miss was nutrition, and it wasn’t a volume problem. Six meals, 2,095 calories — plenty of food. Protein came in at 114g against a 180g goal. That’s 63%. And fat blew past at 102g versus a 60g target. So the calories hit, but the mix was wrong. That’s not a metabolism story, that’s a choices story. I ate enough; I just didn’t eat on purpose. On a slow day with no time pressure, that’s the frustrating kind of miss — I had every opportunity to plan and I planned nothing. The fix is boring and known: decide the protein before the day starts, not reconstruct it after.

Tomorrow's priorities

Tomorrow the week grips back. Protein gets planned before I’m hungry. The silent prospect gets one clean message — decision timeline and the Israel constraint in the same breath, no more circling. And I confirm the certificate follow-up is actually booked before the 24th, not “probably fine.” But tonight the takeaway is quieter than all that. The open question I’m sitting with: if the system can hold a perfect habit day when I stop pushing, why do I still believe the pushing is what holds it together? Maybe the answer is that Shabbat isn’t a gap in the operating system. Maybe it’s a feature.
