7.8 and Reflective: The Table Landed, the Body Didn’t
What the numbers actually said
7.8 and reflective. That’s a good day on paper, and it was — but the shape of it is lopsided in a way I can’t ignore. Family came in at 9. Faith at 8. And then the floor drops out: finance 5, work 5, health 6. The day-in-one-line writes itself — “Rosh Hashanah hosting nailed — Shabbat held clean.” The important stuff landed. The measurable stuff wobbled.
I want to sit in the win first because it’s real and I earned it. Hosting Rosh Hashanah is a charge-4 effort — the kind of day that eats your whole nervous system — and everything landed on time. Daphna was front and center, and my job was to hold the logistics so she could shine. I did. That’s the 9. Not a gift. A build.
The body didn’t show up
Here’s the honest part. My calendar literally said “Run / Swim” at 08:30. Garmin logged nothing. No swim, no run, no weights, no BJJ. Steps: 1,025 against a goal of 8,220. That’s not “light day” — that’s basically stationary. And it’s the second rest day in a row, which is the number that actually worries me. One rest day on Shabbat is fine, contextually correct even. Two is the start of a pattern, and patterns are how good intentions quietly become who you are.
The strange thing? My body was ready. Sleep score 83, resting HR 44, HRV 47, deep and REM both solid. I recovered beautifully for a workout I never did. That’s the tell. It wasn’t fatigue. It was drift — the morning got eaten somewhere between candles and the “chilled and lekker” promise I made to not force my way onto everyone’s timeline. I kept that promise. It’s real middah work and I’m proud of the restraint. But restraint and drift can wear the same clothes, and I need to learn the difference.

Finance is the flag I ignored
Finance came in at 5, and the one habit that failed today is the one that mattered: the Budget Check. Travel and Eating Out are both running hot this cycle — Eating Out especially is louder than I’d like. And I didn’t run the review. Classic move: the systems that build wealth quietly hummed along without me, and the one thing that needed my attention I skipped. It’s easy to feel disciplined about the parts that run themselves. The tell is what you do with the part that doesn’t.
Work at 5 tells a similar story. Backlog’s dragging, a couple of overdue loops. Shabbat is not the day to force those, so I’m not going to flog myself. But I noticed I didn’t even look. Yalla — noted for tomorrow.

So what do I actually take from a 7.8? That I’m genuinely strong in the domains that involve keeping my word — to Daphna, to my values, to the table I set. And that health and money, the two things I claim to care about, are the first to fall off the stack the moment a big day arrives. Tomorrow: run the budget review, do the neck protocol, log some movement to break the two-day streak, and ask Daph one intentional question with no excuses. The table landed. Tomorrow the body and the numbers have to land too. Open question I’m carrying to bed: how do I tell the difference, in the moment, between holy restraint and comfortable drift?
