8.5 Shabbat: Everything Held Except the Protein
What the numbers said
8.5 and reflective. That’s a good day by almost any honest measure, and I want to sit with it before I start poking holes. Habits: 10. Family: 9. Faith: 9. Learning: 9. When the dimensions that define a Shabbat all land in the high single digits, you’ve done the thing you set out to do. The day in one line was “beach, book done, all habits held; only protein missed” — and that’s exactly what it was.
The two 5s tell the rest of the story: health and work. Neither of those is a failure today. Work is a 5 because it’s Shabbat and I didn’t touch it — that’s the point of the day, not a miss. Health is a 5 for a reason I’ll get to, and it’s the one number I’m genuinely annoyed about.
Shabbat did what Shabbat is supposed to do
Full beach day with Daphna and her dad. No phone drift, no rescheduling, no low-grade tension humming under the surface. Just presence. Then an afternoon cycle with Daphna and Sox — quality connection, the kind that doesn’t happen when you’re half-thinking about a pipeline. Lior did his morning dance. He asked Daph a “no-brainer” question that made us both laugh. The rituals held.
Family earns a 9 because it wasn’t passive. It’s easy to score family high just because everyone was in the same apartment. That’s not what today was. Today was intentional — I chose to be there, all the way, and I could feel the difference in how the house felt by evening. Faith held clean too: Tefillin, the Middot check-in, a day structured around rest instead of output. And I closed book #20 — The Innovator’s Dilemma. Every habit on the board got checked. Yalla, that’s a strong Shabbat.

The one honest drag
Health is a 5, and I want to be precise about why. No training today — that’s Shabbat, no penalty, I’m not going to flagellate myself for resting. But nutrition is the real miss and it’s not a small one. 30g of protein against a 180g goal. Calories at 62% of target. On a recovery day, that doesn’t read as discipline — it reads as underfueling. I basically forgot to eat like an adult who trains twice a day.
The frustrating part is that yesterday I wrote almost this exact sentence. Saturday was 30g of protein too. Two days in a row of a protein anchor that just… didn’t show up. The rest of the body signals were fine — 6.7 hours sleep, resting HR at 45, average stress at 17. The recovery was there. I just didn’t feed it.
So the pattern I’m watching isn’t “Shabbat drift” — the day was too good for that framing. It’s narrower and more annoying: on low-structure days, protein is the first thing to fall off the board, and it’s silent. Nobody notices you skipped it until Monday’s training session feels flat.

Tomorrow is a training day, and 180g of protein is non-negotiable — I’m writing it down so I can’t pretend I didn’t. There’s also GTM roles to source with a deadline closing at the end of September, and an ACRO certificate delivery date I need to confirm before month-end. But the real takeaway from an 8.5 Shabbat is quieter than any of that: I know exactly how to be present, and I know exactly how to eat. Today I only remembered one of them. The open question is whether I can hold both on a day that isn’t Shabbat.
