8.8 and 84 Grams: The Day I Trained Twice and Still Underfed the Machine

The number said 8.8. The scale said otherwise.

Life OS closed the day at 8.8, mood “productive,” and honestly that’s a fair read. Nine dimensions in the books and the low one was goals at 7 — which on a Sunday isn’t a wound, it’s just a reminder that July 31 exists. Faith 9, learning 9, habits 9. Health at 8. On paper this is a clean day.

And it mostly was. But there’s a number the day score is too polite to shout about, so I will: 84 grams of protein against a 180g target. Less than half. On a day I trained twice. That’s the whole tension of the day in one line — I moved my body harder than most people move theirs all week, and then I underfed the machine that did the work.

Two workouts, low stress, short sleep

The training itself was genuinely good. HIIT in the morning — 43 minutes, a solid Z2/Z3 split that felt earned rather than punishing. Then a 500m pool swim in the afternoon. Double session on a Sunday, both logged, both real. Not “I meant to.” Actually done.

The body’s telling me it’s fine, too. Resting HR sat at 43, stress averaged 12. Those are numbers you’d frame. The one yellow flag: 6.65 hours of sleep. No score attached to it, but I’ve lived enough of these to know that short sleep plus a protein gap is exactly the combination that quietly borrows from tomorrow. You don’t feel the loan when you take it. You feel it Wednesday.

So the nutrition ledger is honest and a little funny. Cottage cheese and omelet — clean start. Then carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, which is the slip, no dressing it up. Oats and banana. And a salmon fillet at the end doing 40g of redemptive work. Fat came in at 91g against a 60g target — 152%, and most of it was that frosting shaking hands with the salmon. Yalla. It happens.

The quieter wins that actually held the day up

Finished The Lean Startup today — book 21, streak building. Recorded the podcast, and that reflection came in as a charge-4 Win, which is the kind of thing that doesn’t show up on a scale but shows up in how I felt closing the laptop. Faith stack was complete: tefillin, Middot check-in, meditation. Family habits both checked — a morning dance with Lior, and the nightly question for Daphna. Habits at 87%, 13 of 15, on a weekend where I let the bar sit a little lower on purpose. That’s not slacking. That’s designed.

Finance sat at 7 — steady. Monthly spend is running well under the prior cycle across every category, which is the boring kind of good. The portfolio drifted slightly negative on the day, NVDA and GOOG doing the dragging. No action taken, and that’s the right call. The recursion thesis doesn’t get re-litigated on a red Sunday.

Tomorrow's priorities

Here’s the takeaway I’m carrying into Monday: an 8.8 with one real miss is more instructive than a flat 6 with no misses. The protein gap isn’t a verdict on the day — everything else was strong enough that it’s just a data point. But it’s the one thing I actually control tomorrow, so it becomes the whole plan: front-load protein, hit 140g minimum, then chase the ACRO delivery date and a status check on the two projects staring down July 31. The question I’m sitting with tonight is simple and slightly annoying: why is it always the input I know best that I fumble on a good day?
