3.5 and Tired: The Erev Shabbat That Arrived First
3.5, Tired, and Honest About It
The dashboard didn’t flatter me today, and I’m not going to argue with it. 3.5/10, mood: tired. The one-liner the system spat out was “Erev Shabbat arrived before the day did” — which is exactly right. Friday showed up, Shabbat came in on its own schedule, and somewhere in between I never quite started.
Look at the split and you can read the whole day without me saying another word. Finance 6, work 6, family 6 — the load-bearing stuff held. Health 3. Habits 2. That’s not a bad day; that’s a day where the parts of me that run on autopilot kept the lights on while the parts that need me to show up on purpose went dark.
The Number That Actually Stung
Habits at 2 out of 10. One habit kept out of seven. The Middot check-in — that survived. Everything else fell over. No workout logged (trainingLift took its −0.5 and I earned it). Tefillin, not done, on Erev Shabbat of all days, so the faith signal came in weak at 4. Wake-up at 7 — missed, because I let sleep onset drift to 01:25 the night before and the whole morning paid the tax.
The one thing worth keeping from the health column: I still showed up to the pool and moved my body, on a tired Friday after a 01:25 night. The body showed up even when the rest of the system didn’t. It just never got written down — which turns out to be the real lesson of the day.

Zerizut, and the Loop I Didn’t Close
This is the part that’s genuinely useful, so I’ll sit in it. The middah I’ve been working all week is zerizut — moving with purpose, honoring your word on time before it rots. And today I had one open commitment on the ledger: the 2pm pool. I went. I did the thing. And then I didn’t mark it. Didn’t close the loop, didn’t reflect on it, just moved through the commitments like a ghost.
Here’s what I’m learning the slow way: musar isn’t about doing the thing. Doing the thing is the easy half. The work is seeing yourself do it — writing it down, letting the character shift register. I did the action and skipped the internalizing, which is a bit like lifting the weight and forgetting to count the rep. The practice surfaced exactly where I’m weak. That’s the gift, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Meanwhile the boring, reliable stuff kept me afloat. Portfolio ended green — MU, VEA, VXUS all up, a small VST drag that didn’t matter. Expenses stayed lean against income, no budget rupture. Work tasks live and tracked through end of month, nothing on fire. Family time with Daphna and Lior happened. None of that carried me to a good day, but it kept a rough one from becoming a bad one.

Tomorrow is Shabbat, so the work calendar won’t load and I don’t want it to. The whole assignment is to protect the day and actually rest — no holiday exemption from the basics. In bed before 23:20 tonight to start clawing back the sleep debt. And the open question I’m carrying into the rest: if I can show up to the pool but can’t be bothered to mark that I did — what does that say about how I actually treat my own word? Yalla, close the loop. Shabbat shalom.
