6.5 and a Perfect Strip: The Shabbat Promise I Left Open

The Number: 6.5, and Where It Came From

A 6.5 with a reflective mood is a strange thing to sit with. On paper today was almost pristine. Habits went 9 out of 9 — a perfect strip, on Shabbat no less, which is when the checklist usually gets the loosest. Faith came in at an 8. Learning hit a 9 because I closed The Innovator’s Dilemma, book number fifteen this year, streak alive. Middot check-in done. If you only read the top line, this was a clean, quiet, disciplined day.

So why does it land at 6.5? Because a short runway and one open promise dragged the whole thing sideways, and both of them come back to the same thing: keeping my word to myself.

Health at 6: Good Session, Short Runway

Health came in at a 6. The strength session was real and good. Sleep scored a 91, which sounds great until you remember it was paying back two late nights in a row — 00:40 last night — and one good night doesn’t clear a debt that size. The body did its job today. I just keep handing it a short runway and asking for a long takeoff.

And I know exactly how the late nights happen. The day fragments. Blocks stack back-to-back, the reading pulls me in, and bedtime quietly slides. Nobody schedules “stay up till 1am” — it’s the negative space between everything you did schedule.

The Pool Promise I Left Open

The one that actually stings is the pool. Earlier this week I made myself a promise: 2pm swim, today. And it just slipped into the calendar void — no swim, no reschedule, no closure. It didn’t even get captured.

The reason this matters more than it looks is that זריזות — zerizut, promptness, not letting your good intentions decay into “later” — is the middah I’m working on this week. Of all the weeks to leave a small commitment hanging, I picked the one designed specifically to catch this exact failure mode. That’s almost funny. It’s the kind of loose word-keeping that costs you nothing in the moment and erodes trust with yourself over time. Noted. Not excused.

Work sat at a baseline 5 — Shabbat-neutral, no penalty, no fires, nothing overdue. That’s fine. The career clock is ticking toward October and I can feel it, but Saturday isn’t where that battle gets fought. Today’s battle was smaller and I half-lost it: two late nights compounding and a swim that never happened.

Tomorrow's priorities

So here’s the real takeaway. A perfect habit strip can coexist with a soft day, because the checklist measures whether I did the things I listed — not whether I kept the promises I never wrote down. Tomorrow is simple: hit the pool first, close the open loop, log the decision either way. In bed by 23:00. The structure held today. The integrity got sloppy. That’s the fixable kind of miss — but only if I actually fix it. Yalla, morning swim. Let’s see if I mean it.
