7.6 on a Flu Day: When Rest Is the Discipline
What the Numbers Actually Said
7.6 and the mood logged itself as “reflective.” On a normal day I’d squint at that — 7.6 with no workout, protein in the basement, two flat dimensions? But this wasn’t a normal day. This was a flu-recovery day on Erev Shabbat, and honestly, the number is right.
Here’s the shape of it: habits hit 9, family hit 8, learning hit 9, faith 8. Health dragged at 6, work sat at 6. The high scores and the low scores both tell the truth, and they’re not fighting each other — they’re describing a day where I did the small things right and gave my body a pass it actually earned.
The one that surprised me was habits landing at 9 with a clean 8-of-8 completion. Sick, low energy, half-running on fumes — and tefillin still got done, Lior still got his morning dance, Daphna still got her question. That’s the whole point of building a system: it holds when you don’t have the willpower to.
The Wins I’m Naming Out Loud
I finished a book on leadership today. That’s number 35 this year, and the reading streak is still alive going into Shabbat. There’s something quietly satisfying about closing a book on a day when you couldn’t do much else — like the body shut down so the mind could finish something.
The bigger win, and the one I’d have rationalized away a year ago: we handed Lior off to family for a few hours so Daphna and I could both breathe. We’d both been knocked flat by the same flu. A year ago I’d have white-knuckled through it and called it discipline. Today I called it the right move, because it was. Family scored an 8 and it earned every point. Rest you choose on purpose isn’t a shortcut.

Where I Actually Failed
Health is the drag and I’m not going to pretty it up. Zero workouts — which is genuinely fine, yesterday’s swim and HIIT already cleared the weekly intensity goal and you don’t lift with a fever. That one I give myself.
Protein is the real miss. 105g against a 190g goal. That’s 55%, below my 80% floor even on a sick day. Here’s the thing that bugs me: when you’re fighting something off, protein is exactly what the repair work runs on, and I handed my body just over half of what it needed. Calories came in around 1,700 against 2,500 — secondary, appetite-driven, whatever. But the protein number is a choice dressed up as a symptom. When appetite comes back Sunday, that’s the one I fix first.
Work sat at 6, and part of that is honest: it was Erev Shabbat and I let it idle. But my evening system didn’t fully fire today, and I should’ve caught it and triggered it manually instead of shrugging. Small thing. Still a gap.

Tomorrow is Shabbat — full rest, full presence, phone away, no logging, no optimizing. The system gets the day off too. The open question I’m carrying into it: when does “rest you earned” quietly become “rest you’re hiding behind”? Today it was clearly the former. The honesty is in checking — not assuming. Yalla, Shabbat shalom.
