8.6 and the Half-Trained Body: A Clean Day With One Honest Gap

The number said 8.6, but the body said 7

Reflective mood, 8.6 overall, and honestly the score is generous in the right places and honest in the one place that matters. Habits: 10. All 13 checked, clean sweep, no fudging. Learning: 10 — I finished Heschel’s The Sabbath on a Thursday, the eve of Erev Shabbat, which is either coincidence or the kind of timing you don’t argue with. Faith sat at 9. Family at 9. Those are the numbers of a good day.

Then there’s health at 7, and that 7 is the whole story.

I swam. 1km, moderate effort, cold water, fully present coming out of it. That part was real. But the protocol isn’t “swim.” The protocol is two sessions — swim and weights or BJJ — and today I got half of it. One session. And my sleep the night before was excellent: 8.15 hours, resting HR at 44, the body was loaded and ready to be used. I had the tank. I just didn’t spend it. That’s not a fatigue problem, that’s a discipline gap, and I’d rather name it than dress it up.

Protein, again. Always the protein.

128g against a 180g target. 71%. Same drag it always is. Calories came in at 82%, which is marginal-but-fine, but the protein miss after a real swim is just leaving recovery on the table. The chicken carried most of the load and I never got the second protein source in — no shake, no lean bridge between meals. It’s not dramatic. It’s just the recurring small failure that quietly caps everything else. You can hit a 10 on habits and still under-fuel the one system that’s supposed to compound.

Here’s the thing I keep relearning: nutrition isn’t a health task, it’s an everything task. Under-feed the training and the training stops paying you back.

The beach with Daphna was the actual win

We had friction Tuesday. Nothing dramatic, the normal weather of two people raising a toddler and running full lives in parallel. Today we went to the beach and worked through it constructively — gratitude-coded, no scorekeeping, just the two of us and the water and the honest conversation you can only really have when your feet are in the sand and nobody’s rushing anywhere. Family scored a 9 today and it earned every point.

That’s the part the dashboard can’t fully capture. You can log “beach time” as a data point, but the repair — the actually-moving-through-something-together — that’s the thing that makes the 8.6 mean something. Faith infrastructure held too: tefillin done, meditation done, Blinkist done, reading queued for bed. The scaffolding of the day was solid. Yalla, most of it worked.

Work is opaque and the clock is ticking

Work sat at 7, and if I’m honest it’s a 7 because I can’t clearly see what filled the day. The commission structure comms to the team are due July 6 and that clock is loud now. Tomorrow that moves to the front. No coasting on the fact that everything else ran clean — the thing with a deadline gets the deadline treatment.

Tomorrow's priorities

So: a strong day with one honest gap. Finished a great book on Sabbath the night before Sabbath, repaired something real with my wife, ran perfect habits — and still only half-trained a body that was fully rested and ready to work. The open question I’m sitting with tonight: why do I under-fuel and under-train on the exact days everything else goes right? Maybe the good days make me feel like I’ve already banked enough. Tomorrow — second session, 180g, and the comms shipped. No negotiating with myself.
